5 Warning Signs Your Brakes Need Immediate Attention
Your brakes are the most important safety system on your vehicle. Ignoring warning signs can turn a $150 brake pad replacement into a $800 rotor job โ or worse, an accident.
Here are 5 signs your brakes need immediate attention:
1. Squealing or Screeching Sound
Most brake pads have a built-in wear indicator โ a small metal tab that scrapes against the rotor when the pads get thin. That squealing sound IS the warning. Don't ignore it.
What to do: Schedule a brake inspection. Pads that are caught early cost much less to fix.
2. Grinding Metal-on-Metal Sound
If squealing turns into grinding, the pads are completely worn through and metal is scraping metal. This damages the rotors and can compromise stopping distance.
What to do: Stop driving if you can and call a mobile mechanic immediately. Continuing to drive with grinding brakes is dangerous.
3. Soft or Spongy Brake Pedal
If your brake pedal goes further to the floor than usual, or feels "spongy," there may be air in the brake lines or a brake fluid leak. On trucks and trailers with air brakes, this could indicate a serious air system issue.
What to do: This is a safety emergency. Don't drive until this is inspected.
4. Vehicle Pulling to One Side When Braking
If your vehicle pulls left or right when you brake, one brake caliper may be sticking or one side of the brakes is wearing faster than the other.
What to do: Get an alignment and brake inspection done together.
5. Brake Warning Light On
Modern vehicles have a brake warning light on the dashboard. If it comes on, the system has detected a problem โ low fluid, worn pads, or an ABS issue.
What to do: Get it checked before it becomes an emergency.
