5 Warning Signs Your Brakes Need Immediate Attention

Here are 5 signs your brakes need immediate attention:

1. Squealing or Screeching Sound

Most brake pads have a built-in wear indicator — a small metal tab that scrapes against the rotor when the pads get thin. That squealing sound IS the warning. Don't ignore it.

What to do: Schedule a brake inspection. Pads that are caught early cost much less to fix.

2. Grinding Metal-on-Metal Sound

If squealing turns into grinding, the pads are completely worn through and metal is scraping metal. This damages the rotors and can compromise stopping distance.

What to do: Stop driving if you can and call a mobile mechanic immediately. Continuing to drive with grinding brakes is dangerous.

3. Soft or Spongy Brake Pedal

4. Vehicle Pulling to One Side When Braking

5. Brake Warning Light On

Modern vehicles have a brake warning light on the dashboard. If it comes on, the system has detected a problem — low fluid, worn pads, or an ABS issue.
